Now is the time to make sure you are taking care of your hair and skin. Damage from chlorine and sun is hard to reverse. Here are a few tips to take care of your hair & skin this summer:
- Pre-wet your hair: Before swimming, wet your hair with clean water. This helps reduce the amount of chlorinated or salt water absorbed by your hair.
- Apply a leave-in conditioner: Before swimming, apply a leave-in conditioner to your hair. This creates a protective layer that helps prevent chlorine or saltwater from penetrating the hair shaft. Try Aveda’s Nutriplenish Leave-In Conditioner.
- Rinse after swimming: After swimming, rinse your hair with fresh water to remove chlorine or saltwater residue. Follow up with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. We have a full line-up of shampoos and conditioners available for purchase. Give Aveda’s Rosemary Mint or Shampure a try!
- Deep condition regularly: Use a deep conditioning treatment once a week to replenish moisture and repair any damage caused by chlorine or saltwater exposure. Check out Aveda’s line of Botanical Repair products to condition, strengthen and repair your hair.
- Apply sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
- Use after-sun products: Apply aloe vera or an after-sun lotion to soothe and moisturize sun-exposed skin.
- Protect your scalp: If you’ll be spending a lot of time in the sun, consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat to protect your scalp from sunburn.
- Limit heat styling: Minimize the use of heat styling tools on your hair during the summer months to prevent further damage.
